AFLW grand final plagued by rain

Powered by

The Western Bulldogs have claimed victory in the first AFL women's grand final held in Melbourne but it was plagued by rain, with pre-game entertainment cancelled and fans questioning the choice of stadium.

This is a busy weekend for sport in Melbourne, with the first round of the men's AFL and the Grand Prix.

Some fans told 9NEWS the game should have been held at Etihad Stadium and accused organisers of underestimating the popularity of the match.

Torrential rain that swept Melbourne this morning eased at Princes Park as the game got underway but still made conditions tricky.

The rain didn't stop the players or the fans but it did put a halt on Missy Higgins' scheduled show.
