AFL premiership winner Brad Hill has been charged with assault over a pre-season incident at a Melbourne nightclub.

The 22-year-old Hawthorn player was charged last night after a lengthy police investigation into the alleged attack at Narre Warren on January 24.

Hill's alleged 21-year-old victim suffered minor facial injuries.

Despite the charge Hawthorn, which has been aware of the allegations for four months, has not taken disciplinary action against Hill.

Hawks football manager Chris Fagan said Hill had kept the club informed "throughout the entire process".

"The leadership group has already met on this matter and has decided that no sanction will be applied at this stage,"he said.

"The matter is now before the court and any sanction is in the hands of the judicial system."
