Australia has slapped financial counter-terrorism sanctions on Islamic State's Afghanistan arm.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said IS in Khorasan Province had carried out frequent terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan against civilian and government targets, and had attacked international charity workers.

Australia has also renewed its terror listing for IS in Sinai province, which has attacked civilian Muslim and Coptic Christian targets as well as Egyptian security forces.
