Prime Minister Tony Abbott has taken a swipe at the Australian Electoral Commission's "ineptitude" while launching the Liberal party's campaign for the re-run West Australian Senate election.

The poll on April 5 will be the fourth time WA voters head to the polls since the state election in March last year.

"I'm here to, in effect, officially open the Liberal campaign for the Western Australian Senate by-election, which we're having because of the ineptitude of the Electoral Commission," Mr Abbott told reporters in Perth on Tuesday.

"I can understand the frustration of Western Australians having to go to the polls yet again."

Mr Abbott reiterated it was important to get rid of the carbon and mining taxes, which were "anti-Western Australian".

"That's what they are ... so damaging to this state."
