Man charged after cleaner's face slashed in public toilet 'attack'

A man has been charged with attempted murder over a violent attack on a woman in the public toilets of an Adelaide shopping centre.

The 30-year-old woman suffered serious face and back injuries after being assaulted by a man armed with a knife at the Parabanks Shopping Centre in Salisbury, where she worked as a cleaner, on Monday night.

Police pulled over a car being driven by a 25-year-old man in Parafield Gardens at about 8.30pm yesterday, and later charged him with attempted murder.

The Salisbury East man has been refused police bail and is expected to face the Elizabeth Magistrates Court today.

He has also been charged with carrying an offensive weapon and driving while disqualified and unregistered.

The arrest comes after police declared the shopping centre assault a major crime, and asked for public help to identify a suspect captured on CCTV.

The victim was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The retail sector union said earlier this week the attack came after years of concerns for the safety of workers at the northern suburbs shopping centre.

It has called on centre management to introduce tougher security and safety measures in the venue's car park.
