Teenage driver arrested after forcing cars off the road in high-speed joyride

A teenage driver will spend tonight behind bars after a dramatic police pursuit yesterday, when the 19-year-old went on a high-speed joyride down the wrong side of a busy Adelaide street.

The teen was held down on a stretcher and arrested outside a Taperoo property yesterday afternoon after going on a high-speed joyride, driving on the wrong side of the road and forcing other motorists onto a footpath.

CCTV footage of the incident shows the car on Victoria Road occupying the centre of the street, while an oncoming car is forced to mount a curb to avoid it – hitting a power pole in the process. 

Local business owner Tony Rugari, who witnessed the erratic driving, told 9NEWS he wasn’t sure whether the young driver was going to start colliding with pedestrians.

“He actually wasn’t worried about any of the public that was out there and was driving on the wrong side of the road erratically,” he said.

“Then everyone’s running inside because we didn’t know if he was going to jump the curb and start going for people.

“I didn’t know if he was going to come through the shop or kill someone.”

During the joyride, the teenager did collide with one cyclist, who suffered minor injuries in the crash. 

Police were ultimately able to catch the driver after he was seen pulling into the Taperoo property.

He was then restrained on an ambulance stretcher, assessed by paramedics and arrested.

While the motive for the incident remains unknown, the teenager remains in custody after today being refused bail.
