Adelaide suburb city centre set for $200 million transformation

A northern Adelaide suburb's city centre is poised for a significant $200 million redevelopment aimed at revitalising the once-thriving centre.

Plans were unveiled today for Salisbury, which includes the construction of 200 new homes, including affordable housing, apartments, retirement living options, and hotel accommodation. 

SA Housing Minister Nick Champion said the new residential developments would make use of "existing public transport infrastructure, existing shops and medical clinics and chemists and all of the vibrancy here in John Street".

A new multi-story building will make way for an extra 273 car parks.

The major undertaking marks the next phase of the council's city centre renewal plan, following successful upgrades to John and Church Streets in 2023 and the completion of the $43 million Salisbury Community Hub in 2019.

Residents and business owners alike have welcomed the redevelopment plans.

"Salisbury had a tradition of being a great regional hub and yet all the shopping centres that built around it that's not the case as much as it used to be," business owner Dion Stansbury said.

Local resident Ali Aloveyz agreed the plan was "a really good thing" to bring people back to the area and create more business opportunities.

"We're happy for more people here and more business," local business owner Nadir Fedayee agreed.

The project is expected to generate more than 150 jobs during and after construction, with the build scheduled to commence in 2025.
