Workers from a shopping centre in Adelaide's north-west have made a citizen's arrest after seeing a man smashing his way into a cafe.

They chased him down and held him in the car park of the Greenacres Shopping Centre until police arrived.

The 43-year-old man allegedly broke in the front door just after midnight.

The Gilles Plains man has been charged with serious criminal trespass and theft.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.
