Family dog protects couple from home intruder

An Adelaide couple's pet dog has help fend off an armed home invader overnight. 

Just after 5am, the man forced his way inside the Prospect home through a dog-door at the rear of the property. 

Their pet schnauzer's bark alerted the couple, who were asleep at the time. 

The pair awoke to find the man - armed with a knife - inside their bedroom.

They then chased the man outside, where he made off in a station wagon. 

Police said the getaway vehicle is most likely a late 1990s/early 2000s station wagon, possibly a Subaru Forester. 

The terrifying ordeal has left residents on edge.

"It is very, very scary, you are too scared to move these days you don't know what to expect around the corner," one resident said 

They say it's not the first time their street has been targeted, forcing them to beef up security. 

"I've got alarms, cameras you name it, and a lot of people are doing it now. You just can't take the risk," Prospect resident, Mark told 9NEWS. 

No one was injured in the incident.
