Adelaide's plan to boost childcare centres in the CBD

Adelaide’s new Lord Mayor has a plan to help parents and boost the number of childcare centres in the city centre.

Sandy Verschoor wants all new buildings in the CBD to have space for a childcare centre, and plans to put this to the City Council on Tuesday.

“The ability to be able to work and you're five minutes from home, five minutes from your childcare would just actually be a wonderful way to live,” she said.

Parents have welcomed the idea, saying there needs to be more options for parents who work in the city, where centres are highly sought after.

“I work in the city and my childcare would be 50 minutes away and he has had an accident before and gone in an ambulance, and we couldn't get there in time so it would be much, much better to be a lot closer,” mother Lisa Sharma told 9News.

Councillor Anne Moran said the council’s aim is to provide a close childcare for every worker in the city that needs it.

Those championing the move, said it would mean childcare providers could rent spaces in new city buildings, as well as making it easier for existing buildings to retrofit childcare centres.
