Police are hunting for a man wanted over a terrifying assault on a young girl at a popular Blair Athol park.

Local residents fear the person responsible may have struck before in the area, in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

Police were called to a reserve on Lionel Avenue after receiving a report that a child had been attacked.

Officers say the girl told them she was approached by a man who then assaulted her.

Local resident Richard Tyrcha said police told him it's the second time an incident like this has happened.

"They literally just said a man had been spotted trying to lure a child away," Mr Tyrcha said.

"They told us apparently it had happened a few months ago as well ... it's despicable."

The offender has been described as around 50 years old, of Middle Eastern appearance, with black straight hair and a distinctive fringe.

He was wearing a light coloured t-shirt and shorts.

Investigators are appealing for anyone with information that could help them - to come forward.
