Two new e-scooter companies launch in Adelaide

Beam's purple e-scooters have begun zipping through Adelaide's CBD.

The company and another operator, Ride, have both secured six month permits from the Adelaide City Council.

“We'll have around 50 to 100 this week and then we'll be scaling up,” Tom Cooper of Ride said.

It follows the controversial decision to scrap Lime scooters from Adelaide streets, which had been trialling their electronic scooters since February.

Its fleet of 500 green scooters were removed from the CBD on Sunday night, with the company starting a petition online to get back on the streets.

Lime admits it's been soured by the decision, which it says has put 250 jobs at risk.

But the Adelaide City Council says the rival operators were selected because their product was superior with the scooters coming to a gradual halt when they are approaching restricted areas.

“We met every criteria that the council set and one of the key criteria was the ability to slow the scooter down at the edge of a geofence and then slowly stop it,” Brad Kitschke of Beam said.

Despite the introduction of the new scooters it may not be the end of Lime's ride, with the company today confirming it's in talks with local councils outside the Adelaide CBD.

“We've had some really good leads already in two other councils and we've had other councils actually reach out to us over the weekend wanting them so looking very positive from that,” Jeff Roberts of Lime said.

During the six-month trial, the scooters can still only be used around the CBD area.
