A man has been charged with leading Adelaide police on a chase in a stolen car before having his tyres spiked and crashing into a patrol car.

The stolen car was spotted on Yattalunga Road at Humbug Scrub, north of Adelaide, on Friday night and took off at high speed when approached by police, who abandoned the chase for safety reasons.

Police set up cordons in the area and pursued the car again at One Tree Hill before laying road spikes, deflating the vehicle's tyres.

The motorist continued driving the car on its rims and came to a stop when he collided with a patrol car in Elizabeth North.

Nobody was injured in the pursuit, police say.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with engaging in a police pursuit, illegal use of a motor vehicle, and driving while disqualified. He is due to appear at Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday.

A female passenger was spoken to by police but not charged.
