Machine gun among over 200 weapons found in Adelaide home

A 53-year-old man is behind bars after police uncovered an arsenal of more than 200 illegal firearms including a machine gun at an Adelaide Hills home.

Police seized weapons including an assault rifle, shotguns, a machine gun, pistols, silencers, crossbows, a dagger, as well as "flash bang" explosives.

All up, 203 illegal firearms and 38 registered firearms were discovered at the property. They also found, 200kg of bullets - including military ammunition.

The Australian Defence Force has been called-in, to assist with the investigation.

Police said the assault rifle they found was similar to the one used in a mass shooting in Texas, at the weekend.

Officers spent three days at the property, removing the arsenal.

"Some of these weapons are some of the most lethal that are made and they don't belong in the community," South Australia Police Superintendent Stephen Howard said.

"The SKS is a firearm that is made for war.

"It's purely designed for killing people."

The 53-year-old has been charged with firearms offences as well as "indecent filming of a person, over the age of 17" and "threatening to distribute invasive images".

The man, whose identity has been suppressed, was arrested on Friday night at a rural property in the Adelaide Hills.

That's where police discovered the massive haul of weapons and ammunition some of which were hidden in secret rooms.  

Prosecutors expect more charges to be laid and they've asked for an unusually-long amount of time until the next court date, because of the complexities of the case.

The man appeared in court this afternoon and didn't say anything. His lawyer did not apply for bail.

At this stage the accused man is scheduled to reappear in May next year.
