Firefighters battle Adelaide furniture factory blaze

Firefighters are battling a large blaze in a furniture factory in Adelaide’s north, with the flames fuelled by explosive solvents and timber.

The inferno erupted in the family-owned Beilby’s Quality Furniture - in Millers Rd, Wingfield – just before 2pm (ACST).

A large plume of smoke was visible across the Adelaide metropolitan area, as Metropolitan Fire Service crews fought to contain the fire.

Emergency services evacuated the building and a neighbouring tyre business as they tried to extinguish the flames.

Owner Lou Makris spoke with Nine News, as he watched the firefighters work in vain to save his 30-year-old business.

“I don’t think there’s any chance of saving anything, from what I can see from here,” Mr Makris told Nine News.

“It’s not something that we ever thought of, but even finding machinery could be six months to get back to work.”

Investigators have not yet established what caused the fire, which was brought under control shortly before 4pm.
