A knife-wielding man has been caught on camera, slashing car tyres in Adelaide.

The attack began in full view of a security camera about 5am yesterday on Nelson Street, Kilburn.

The man was armed with a large knife and a wooden pole, which he flung towards the home on Chris Becker and his partner.

"I did grab my baseball bat and thought I should go out there and confront him in case he damaged the cars but I suppose common sense kicked in," Mr Becker said.

Mr Becker said he called police, who arrived a short time later.

The officers who responded to the incident spoke to the man but he was let go without charge.

Residents noticed their slashed tyres yesterday afternoon and contacted police again, who are reviewing the security footage.

Police believe they know who the man is and investigations are continuing.
