Adelaide CBD speed limits could be capped at 30km/h under new proposal

Roads in the middle of Adelaide could soon be limited to just 30km/h, with the city council to consider a proposal to slash the speed limit across the CBD.

If approved, if would lead to a uniform 30 km/h limit across all city and North Adelaide streets, with the exception of arterial roads where the speed limit would increase to 50 km/h.

"What we don't want to do is make it difficult for people who need to come into the city but at the same time we have to balance safety," Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said.

"This is just the beginning of the conversation but over the decades, generally speed limits have reduced," she added.

Some pedestrians are in favour of the proposal to increase safety.

"I've got titanium here, titanium here," Ian Phillips said.

"I've got this surgery and that's cause a car was speeding… I'm living proof that it hurts to get hit by a car doing 40km/h."

But others expressed concerns about the increasing traffic congestion during peak hour, and some labelled the proposal "ridiculous", "confusing" and even "extreme".
