'Like a train had hit us': Survivors tell of horror Adelaide crash caught on dashcam

A crash survivor has told 9News of how he and three others came within seconds of death, when a speeding driver cannoned into their car.

The vehicle that hit them had just raced through a red light at Modbury North - a terrified witness in a third vehicle watching on, his dash-camera recording the impact.

It was a Holden Astra that caused the crash at the intersection of McIntyre and Montague roads just before 9pm on Sunday.

It struck a station wagon in which four friends were travelling - one of them was Wynn Vale man Twiz Dale.

"It was like a train had hit into us," he said.

Mister Dale said the only warning he had was when one of the other passengers let out a brief scream.

"She just yelled 'oh my' ... she didn't even get the 'God' out because the car ripped into us.

"If it was two metres faster, I think myself and Karen (his wife) would've been in boxes for the weekend, it was just that big of an impact."

Witness Lachlan Hall, whose dash-cam captured the Astra's approach and then the impact, said his car shook when the crash happened.

"Seeing a crash like that, at that speed, you don't get a lot of people surviving and thankfully that that day the death toll didn't rise," Mr Hall said.

The 56-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Astra suffered serious injuries and has had surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Police are yet to speak with her - their investigations into the crash continue.
