Adam Goodes hounding 'must stop'

Australia's race discrimination commissioner says some AFL supporters boo Sydney player Adam Goodes because his outspoken stance against racism makes them uncomfortable.

The dual Brownlow medallist is taking time out of the game after being continually booed throughout the season, culminating in last week's match against West Coast in Perth.

"Many may be joining in with the booing because they are seeking to put a proud Aboriginal man in his place because he has dared to speak out on issues touching on race," Tim Soutphommasane told a Canberra university event on Wednesday.

"How is it that such a champion and statesman of the game is being treated like a pantomime villain?"

Dr Soutphommasane said it would be up to the AFL to help put an end to the saga.

But he said it would be an indictment on society if players took matters into their own hands - and follow some European football players - by walking off the field in protest against racist abuse.

Goodes has been given extended leave by Sydney and will not play in the Swans' game against Adelaide on Saturday, while some reports say he's considering early retirement.
