Political career looms for Swans star Goodes

Sydney Swans star and Australian of the Year Adam Goodes is reportedly thinking of entering politics after he steps off the footy field.

The AFL icon, aged 34, said he wanted to be remembered as more than just a footballer, News Corp reported.

He wants to make a difference to widespread social problems including racism and domestic violence.

Goodes has been outspoken on both issues in the past, once famously pointing out a girl who called him an "ape" during a match.

He said politics would be a "real option" for creating change.

"It allows you to do something positive for a large amount of people," he said.

Goodes was named the 2014 Australian of the Year.

And while he is determined to make a difference for disadvantaged people across the country, his main priority now is to bring more premiership glory to the Sydney Swans following the team's heartbreaking loss to Hawthorn in this year's grand final.

"That grand final loss is what motivates me, it still hurts and is why I am down here and in the gym pushing myself, it’s why I couldn’t retire," he said.
