Unions will target more than 30 marginal seats across Australia in a national campaign against the Abbott Government in the lead up to the next federal election.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) said the campaign would commence on Wednesday, and focus on 32 federal marginals.

The ACTU said Victorian seats of Deakin, Corangamite, La Trobe and Dunkely would be targeted, as would be a number of seats in Western Sydney and Eden Monaro on the NSW south coast.

"The ACTU will hire more than 20 new staff as marginal seat co-ordinators to run campaign activities in the nominated seats," ACTu secretary Dave Oliver said in a statement.

"It's about having the ability to campaign on specific issues through a network of activists in marginal seats."

The campaign launch coincides with a national day of union action on Wednesday, with rallies scheduled in many capital cities and regional centres.
