Actor Carroll welcomes year with new son

Australian actor and Play School presenter Luke Carroll has celebrated a private new year spectacle with his partner, Danica Sarno, who was delivered of Sydney's first baby of the year.

The actor and Sarno welcomed son Enzo Jett Carroll a few minutes after midnight on New Year's Day - two days ahead of schedule, according to News Limited newspapers.

Carroll, 34, almost missed the birth, having flown to Brisbane on Monday to rehearse for a new play, Black Fingers, before getting a call telling him Sarno's waters had broken in Sydney.

"I was back on a plane at 6pm that night. It was a crazy 24 hours but I was glad to be here for the arrival of this gorgeous boy," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"I know there were a lot of fireworks happening out on the harbour, but there were certainly some happening in the delivery suite.

"He definitely came out with a bang."

Carroll said his newborn son has been quiet since his arrival.

"We're blessed at this stage with him being so well-behaved. Let's hope it continues like that through the next 18 years."

Sarno is recovering at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick.
