Warning to Canberra protesters ahead of Israeli president's visit

Police will be out in force in Canberra today ahead of expected protests over the visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog to the national capital.

ACT Chief Police Officer Scott Lee said extra resources would be on hand.

"We respect people's right to peacefully protest however where actions break laws or are a danger to public safety – including the safety of other protestors – our officers will respond to these incidents," Lee said.

"We will have a significant and dedicated police presence, including those from AFP Protection and Specialist Operations, on Canberra's streets during these protests to keep everyone in the community safe."

The warning comes after violent clashes between police and protesters on Sunday in Sydney.

Lee said police would be on particular watch for racial vilification and other criminal behaviour, and pledged officers would investigate "placards, signs, or flags" that breached hate laws.

"We are asking those in the community who plan to protest to do so peacefully and follow police directions," he said.

Police warned that traffic could be disrupted on roads to and from Canberra Airport, and in and around the Parliamentary Triangle today.

People travelling to the airport should leave plenty of time to make scheduled flights, factoring in potential delays on the roads.

Drivers who find themselves in delayed traffic are reminded to obey the directions of police, and if stopped, should not break road rules – including crossing verges, paths or median strips.
