Drunk driver cuts power to ACT homes

Homes and businesses in Canberra were left without power for six hours after a driver alleged to be drunk crashed into an electricity substation.

Police say a 74-year-old man crashed his car into two other vehicles while leaving the car park of the Canberra Irish Club in Weston on Sunday evening.

The car crossed the street outside the club, mounted the kerb and crashed into an electricity substation.

Nearby 67 businesses and homes were left without power for about six hours.

The driver gave a blood alcohol reading of 0.082 when breath-tested at Woden police station, officers said.

The man will appear in court at a date to be set.
