Cases surge in ACT as 462 new COVID-19 infections recorded

Case numbers have taken another jump today in the ACT, with the territory recording another 462 new COVID-19 infections.

There are now a total of 1658 active cases, six of whom are being treated for the virus in hospital. None of those are currently in ICU.

Some 4200 tests were conducted in the latest reporting period.

Today's total is an increase on the 253 cases recorded yesterday, as the Omicron variant continues its spread across the country.

More than 98 per cent of the ACT's eligible population aged 12 and above are now fully vaccinated.

As Canberrans prepare to ring in the new year, authorities have warned over large gatherings and enclosed areas where social distancing cannot be maintained.

Today's numbers come after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced changes to isolation periods for close contacts and confirmed cases, following an emergency meeting of National Cabinet.

The isolation period for confirmed cases changed to seven days, however with today's statement if a person continues to have symptoms they will isolate for longer.
