Aust to gain seat on UN human rights body

Australia is expected to be elected unopposed for a spot on the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Early on Tuesday (AEDT) the UN will hold elections for two positions on the rights council from 2018-2020

What was originally a three-horse race between France, Spain and Australia has narrowed after Paris withdrew its candidacy.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop insists Australia is a transparent, accountable nation and would bring a principled, pragmatic approach to work at the council if elected.

"Australia is open to being investigated and open to views from outside, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't rightfully take our place on the human rights council," Ms Bishop told reporters in Canberra on Monday.

Ms Bishop had been buoyed by the enormous level of support towards Australia's bid when it was a contested campaign.

But ahead of the election, some groups are not so glowing about Australia's credentials.

"Australia's human rights record is on shaky ground when it comes to their ongoing treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum," Refugee Council of Australia chief executive Paul Power said.

The National Congress of Australia's First Peoples was also critical of the federal government's relationship with indigenous Australians that had been "sorely strained" in recent years.

If Australia's bid is signed off it will be the first time it has served on the council.

The UN is set to scrutinise Australia's human rights record on Wednesday as part of a regular examination process.
