A father picking up his child from a primary school in Canberra was killed when his ute exploded in the carpark.

Emergency services were called to St Clare of Assisi Primary School in Conder just before 5pm on Thursday after the explosion blew a hole in the side of the vehicle.

The man was rushed to Canberra Hospital but later died from his injuries. No-one else was hurt by the blast.

St Clare of Assisi Primary School will be closed on Friday after principal Matt Egan-Richards emailed parents about the tragedy.

"It is with deep sadness that I need to let you know that following an incident in the school carpark today, one of our parents has passed away," the email obtained by the ABC read.

"At this difficult time, we pray for the family and friends. We will offer all the support we can in coming days and weeks."

Catholic Education director Ross Fox said the man was picking up his child from after-school care.

"It's a tragic event for the community and we'll be doing everything we can to support the family the affected student and the community," he told The Canberra Times.

ACT police and WorkSafe are investigating the incident.
