A Canberra motorist will face court after allegedly dragging a 79-year-old man behind his ute for 30 metres outside the Australian War Memorial.

Police say the 20-year-old and the older man were involved in a collision on Wednesday afternoon.

It's alleged the older man attempted to talk to the younger driver, and after a minor altercation the 20-year-old drove off, dragging the older man about 30m.

The 79-year-old was left badly scraped and was taken to Calvary Hospital.

An ACT police spokeswoman says it is unclear how the older man was dragged behind the car, and they hope to find out more during an interview with him on Thursday.

Police arrested the 20-year-old and charged him with aggravated, furious and dangerous driving. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court on November 19.
