Accused Vic murderer "spoke to devil"

A man charged with murdering a worshipper at a Melbourne mosque says he went there because he spoke to the devil.

Erol Elmas, 22, has briefly faced court charged with the stabbing murder of 68-year-old Omer Ali Aysel at the Dallas mosque in December.

Appearing via videolink from custody, Elmas told the Melbourne Magistrates Court he went to the mosque and a hospital to seek help.

"I went to the mosque because I spoke to the devil," he told the court on Wednesday.

"What would you do if you spoke to the devil?

"I plead guilty to anything, as long as you understand I was seeking help.

"Everyone's just making me look like a bad guy."

Elmas was taken to a medical clinic for overdosing on ice three days before the killing, Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg said during the committal mention hearing.

The parties are waiting on his toxicology results.

Defence barrister Karen Argiropoulos said her client had experienced hallucinations and delusions in the days before the alleged murder.

The question was whether he was suffering from a mental illness or from a drug-induced psychosis, she said.

If he was found to have been suffering from a drug-induced psychosis, a defence of mental impairment would not be available to him, she said.

At an earlier hearing in December, Elmas's lawyer said he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and drug-induced psychosis.

Elmas, of Broadmeadows, was not required to enter a plea and was remanded in custody for a further committal mention hearing on April 14.
