ACCC warns of carbon tax repeal scam

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has warned the public of scammers falsely pretending to offer refunds from the carbon tax repeal.

ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard told Fairfax Media the scam saw consumers offered $7000 refunds from the repeal.

"They do two things – they ask you to confirm your personal details, or they'll ask you to call them back and speak to a certain person, before asking for your bank account details," she said.

Con artists were taking advantage of media coverage of current events, with multiple reports of the scam in the past two weeks, she said.

Another prominent scam to note surrounded Australian airlines, offering a $999 reward in an attempt to gain access to consumers’ bank details.

Ms Rickard warned the public not to hand over more information than otherwise necessary and to double-check any contact details given by purported customer service representatives.
