ABC slashing up to 250 jobs; axing 7.45am flagship radio bulletin; rebranding ABC Life

The ABC will slash up to 250 jobs and axe its flagship 7.45am radio news bulletin in a major shake-up at the national broadcaster.

The public broadcaster's lifestyle website "ABC Life" will also be rebranded to ABC Local.

ABC Life Editor Bhakti Puvanethiran said at least half the team would be cut.

"It's devastating news and the details are unclear right now, but what I know for sure is I'm really proud of what we've built," she wrote on Twitter.

No division will be spared in the job cuts as the broadcaster tries to save $40 million under a five-year plan.

"This is a difficult time for us, as it is for the broader economy and community as we all struggle with the events of this year," ABC managing director David Anderson said today.

Mr Anderson also announced a plan to have 75 per cent of the ABC's content makers based outside the headquarters in Sydney by 2025.

ABC radio's 7.45am news bulletin will also be scrapped under the changes.

There will be changes to the TV channels, with the rebranding of ABC Comedy to focus on a broader range of programs.

The measures are being made to combat an $84 million budget shortage.
