ABC cuts Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s television program

The ABC has axed Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s Australia Wide program a month after she made controversial Anzac Day comments on social media.

Abdel-Magied’s program will “not be renewed for another season” as part of the broadcaster’s programming and staffing restructure, a spokesman for the ABC told 9news.com.au.

The 26-year-old had hosted Australia Wide since 2016. The program showcased stories of people and places across the nation.

Abdel-Magied sparked wide-spread controversy on Anzac Day after writing a status on Facebook that read:  “Lest We Forget (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine ...)”.

“I am disgusted to actually hear about Yassmin Abdel-Magied's comments on social media,” One Nation leader Pauline Hanson said in a Facebook video at the time. 

The ABC spokesman denied the cancellation of Australia Wide was linked to the Abdel-Magied’s post.

"This decision has been under consideration for some time and was not to do with any controversy over presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied,” he told 9news.com.au

“Yassmin was aware the program was under review, and we are discussing with her future opportunities at the ABC."

Abdel-Magied said she was “treated unfairly” after making the post in a speech to high school students at the Sydney Writers Festival on Monday.
