ABC boss rules out online cuts

The ABC will not consider shutting down investment online and on mobile technology in the face of pressure to cut its budget.

ABC managing director Mark Scott conceded during a speech at Melbourne University that the national broadcaster's budget had already been cut this year and more cuts were on the way.

However, he said closing streaming website iview, or turning off public news online, or streaming to mobiles and tablets was not on the agenda.

His comments come amid speculation that the ABC board is considering axing programs including Lateline due to funding cuts.

Mr Scott said he still did not know what the future funding position of the ABC would be.

"We are still not sure precisely how much will be cut. We are still not sure precisely when the cuts will become payable," he said.

He said the final cuts would be decided once the size and timing of the budget cuts were known.
