Outgoing ABC managing director Mark Scott has rejected claims the public broadcaster is left-biased.

Liberal senator Eric Abetz issued a statement on Wednesday calling on Mr Scott to outline a plan to address "institutional bias" which made the broadcaster a "lefty love-in".

"You hear more diverse views on the ABC now than ever before," Mr Scott told the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday.

"The public thinks the ABC is far more fair and balanced than any other media in the country."

Mr Scott said the "vast majority" of politicians respected and understood the independence of the ABC.

Politicians would complain about stories, but he did not think that put pressure on the broadcaster or represented an attack on its independence.
