Abbott honours indigenous WWII vets

Tony Abbott has paid tribute to the indigenous men who fought for Australia at a time when the nation didn't recognise them.

The prime minister noted that while the soldiers of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion had not always been treated with honour when World War II came to them, they

all served with honour.

"The remarkable thing about the war in the Torres Strait is the extraordinary commitment to Australia, shown by these people, shown by people who hadn't always been shown respect and courtesy by the country they served," he told a remembrance service on Thursday Island.
