Abbott calls on Muslims to join ‘Team Australia’ to combat militants

Tony Abbott was trying to bring mainstream Muslims in from the Sydney cold, enlisting support to stop Australian militants fighting overseas.

The Prime Minister told a multicultural media conference that no one should be complacent about the threat of home grown terrorism.

“There is one thing that could damage the rich and strong social fabric of our country, it would be a mass casualty event,” he said.

“Everyone has got to be on team Australia.”

Angry Islamic leaders fear the anti-terror laws unfairly target the Muslim community.

There's a willingness to be part of the security umbrella, but a need for more detail.

“We don’t want to see the actions of a few lunatics be used to take away our hard-earned civil liberties as a nation,” said Keysar Trad from the Islamic Friendship Association.
