Tasmanian business projects over $50 million will get fast-tracked under a new deal signed between the state and federal governments.

Hobart will also host a new icebreaker ship from 2019.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the two measures were an important sign of the government's commitment to Tasmania.

"I think Tasmania has a great future," he said in Hobart on Thursday.

The prime minister and Treasurer Joe Hockey also took part in a teleconference meeting with the Commonwealth-Tasmanian Economic Council.

The $50 million threshold will be outlined in a memorandum of understanding to set up the Major Projects Agency.
