Why Hey Dad star's second parole bid was not supported

The State Parole Authority has not backed Robert Hughes' latest bid for freedom for a second time, leaving the Hey Dad! star to remain in his cell at Long Bay Jail.

Crime Editor Simon Bouda told A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw that after a private meeting, the five-member panel decided Hughes still remains an unacceptable risk to the community.

Hughes was convicted of 10 counts of sexual and indecent assault of young girls in the 1980s and 1990s and locked up for 10 years.

His trial heard he molested girls aged between seven and 15 years.

When Hughes was sentenced the judge described the actor as a sexual predator who exploited young girls and relied on his position to ensure their silence and compliance.

While Hughes' parole bid was again not backed, the actor may still have other options.

Bouda said there was another avenue for Hughes to appeal against the decision that was made this morning.

But he would have two months to find evidence to refute the authority's decision before he's even considered for a review.

Otherwise Hughes will be able to apply for parole again next year, which he is legally entitled to do annually until his sentence ends in 2025.
