Sydney man says couple's 'sob story' convinced him to hand over car in Facebook sale gone wrong

A Sydney man says his trust has been abused after his vehicle was allegedly stolen in an online car sale gone wrong.

Andre Azar recently put his $17,000 2014 Jeep Laredo up for sale on Facebook.

The Azars wanted a quick sale, so they listed it for $5000 to $6000 less than market value and were contacted within hours by prospective buyers.

That night, a young couple were welcomed into the Azar family home in Sydney's south west.

What followed was a hard-luck story that resulted in a dodgy cheque deposited into Azar's account and his vehicle registered to another owner despite there being no paperwork.

Azar now hopes nobody else falls for the same trap.

"I was not expecting this to happen because I would never do it to anyone else," Azar said.

On Monday 8 July 2024, officers attached to Bankstown Police Area Command, commenced an investigation following reports of an alleged online car sale scam in the Greenacre area.

Investigations are ongoing, with police appealing for anyone with information about the alleged scam to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
