Family's grief at news paramedic's alleged killer could be deemed not criminally responsible

A Current Affair host Ally Langdon was brought to tears as the devastated family members of slain Sydney paramedic Steven Tougher shared their heartbreak following a shock development in court.

Steven was stabbed 55 times by Jordan Fineanganofo in a McDonald's car park in April last year, just weeks before the birth of his daughter Lily May Stevie.

Today, a court heard his alleged killer might not be held criminally responsible for his crime due to severe mental health issues.

Fineanganofo, 23, will likely avoid a jail cell, instead spending time in a mental health facility until he is well enough to return to the community.

"I feel robbed of justice. I feel robbed for my little girl, I'm just heartbroken," Steven's wife Madison said.

Speaking to Steven's grieving parents, sister and wife, Langdon became emotional as dad Jeff spoke of his son's kind nature.

"The saddest part about all of this is if he'd asked my son for help, he would've been showered with compassion because that's what my son does," Jeff said.

"Here is your son, a man filled with so much compassion, that's why he became a paramedic, for us to be sitting here and talking about this and what's happened, I'm just, I'm so sorry," Langdon said tearfully.

"You need to give each other a hug, I wish I was there to give you one".

The case will return to court on Friday.
