New series lifts lid on 'tightly guarded' AFL player agents

The "most secretly guarded aspect of AFL football" is set to be laid bare like never before, in a new documentary series coming to Stan.

Show Me The Money is a three-part Stan Original series that lifts the lid on the world of AFL player agents.

"This has always been the most secret tightly guarded aspect of AFL football, the back rooms and what happens in the off-season," series co-creator and Jam TV CEO, Cos Cardone told A Current Affair.

"It hasn't been explored properly and the attraction to us was to give viewers something they haven't seen before."

Paul Connors from Connor Sports Management is among the agents who are profiled in the series.

"Our job is to keep our players in jobs," Mr Connors said.

"If they're not getting opportunities at a club, it's time to move on.

"I'm an accountant by trade and I've got a finance side to myself.

"With all the players that come through my agency, I want to make sure that they save as much as they can."

As a player, Alex McDonald was a number one draft pick himself in 1988.

McDonald is now an agent and the founder of Hemisphere Sports Management.

"You've got to do it for yourself," McDonald advised young football prospects.

"If you want to succeed at the highest level in sport, don't do it for mum and dad, or your favorite coach, or your girlfriend."

McDonald also advised young athletes to be realistic and not to expect things to be easy.

"You can set yourself up really well (as a professional footballer), so there are benefits, but like anything in life there's going to be some sacrifices," he said.

Show Me The Money was filmed during the AFL's trade and draft period at the end of 2021.

In addition to Connors and McDonald, the series also follows the business of fellow agents Ben Williams and Colin Young.

Mr Williams represents teenager Jason Horne-Francis, who was eventually taken as the number one draft pick in the most recent AFL draft.

Show Me The Money captures behind-the-scenes footage of Horne-Francis as he awaited selection by the North Melbourne Kangaroos.

Cameras were allowed into the home of Horne-Francis, as he met with his new coach, David Noble, on the eve of the draft.

"The storylines are very, very human, and I think anybody who is into great storytelling – and especially if you like your sport – you're going to enjoy it a lot," Mr Cardone said.
