Tech expert Trevor Long kits out Aussie family with smart home for under $100

For many of us, smart homes sound like a thing of the future – ultramodern and ultra-expensive.

But tech expert Trevor Long says the latest gadgets are far more affordable than you'd expect.

In fact, Mr Long has even managed to set up an Aussie family with some of the latest smart home gadgets for under $100.

First up, he purchased the Hunt family a smart light bulb from Harvey Norman for $10.

"Very simple product, connect it to your wifi network, and then you can control it with your voice if you've got a Google home," Mr Long told A Current Affair.

Next on the list was what's called an Infrared Blaster coming in at $29.

The device takes over your remote control and is again connected to your internet network, so it can be controlled by Google.

"We can say 'Hey Google, turn on the TV,' and now we're ready to watch," Mr Long said.

Mr Long also purchased the family an $18 Smart Plug.

"It's like a double adaptor, you plug it into your normal power point, but then anything can plug in here and that then is connected to your wifi, and you can control it by your voice or by an app."

Also, within the budget was a Smart indoor security camera for $39.

Tech expert Stephen Fenech says smart homes offer a plethora of benefits.

"A smart home offers safety, it offers security, but it also offers cost savings," Mr Fenech said.
