'A statement': Senator cradles baby while delivering maiden speech in parliament

Queensland Senator Corinne Mulholland cradled her eight-month-old son, Auggie, as she delivered her maiden speech in parliament.

The sight made headlines, but she said it was a symbol of why she was in politics.

"The job of the politician is not dissimilar to so many other working mums out there, where we need to work around the clock and we need to make it work," she told A Current Affair.

True to that sentiment, Mulholland was forced to leave the interview early to go vote.

Upon her return, she picked up right where she left off.

"It's not going to be a regular occurrence, but it was about making a statement to make sure that I remind myself why I'm here, and that is the fight for the people outside of this building who can't take their kids to work with them, who have to leave in a childcare place," she said.
