Public housing is about supporting Victorians who need it. 
 
People can apply for public housing provided they meet the strict eligibility criteria – this includes living in Victoria, meeting income and asset limits, having Australian citizenship or permanent residency, and not owning or part owning a house, flat or unit. 
 
If they are approved, they are placed on the housing waiting list. 
 
Every person living in public housing must pay rent. Rent payable is calculated using the total household income. The vast majority of tenants are in receipt of a Centrelink payment. 
 
Every public housing property has a market rent related to the value of the property – the amount is determined by an independent valuer based on the private rental market in the same location.
