'Everyone is pretty upset': Retirees playing ukuleles in the park banned by council

A group of Aussie retirees have found joy in playing the ukulele together in the park but their community spirit has hit a sour note after the council banned them.

The "Hot Curri Jammers" play the ukulele together at Sunshine Coast's Currimundi Lake.

Why the name?

"Well this is Currimundi and we're hot and we jam that goes without saying," one member told A Current Affair.

The group started during COVID-19 and has only grown since.

"What I loved about the park was the people who just came along, we had our followers and they would bring their chairs along and sit there with their cups of coffee," another member said.

But its instruments down until they're granted a council permit, all because of one complainant in a nearby residence.

"Everyone is pretty upset and asking how can one person stop so many people being happy," the group said.

A Current Affair tried speaking with the complainant but they didn't answer.

In a statement, a Sunshine Council spokesperson said: "Council received a noise complaint in relation to the performers using amplification close to residents and local businesses.

"The music gathering was found to be operating outside of council's local law. Which is why we offer a number of venues for performances including set busking sites."
