Queensland man still chasing insurance payout three years after hit-run

A Queensland man is running out of patience with a major insurer that still won't pay him out, three years after a hit-run left him unable to work.

Daniel Topfer was left with several fractures, cuts and bruises after he was mowed down in a road rage accident following a Christmas party beside the busy Sunshine Plaza on the Sunshine Coast.

Shocking dashcam footage captured the hit-run, where a car was seen performing an illegal U-turn and driving toward a group including Topher after an earlier altercation.

The 18-year-old man behind the wheel has served jail time over the road rage incident, but Topfer is yet to receive any insurance compensation for the injuries and trauma he suffered.

Despite the incident happening after a work Christmas party, Topfer was not eligible for worker's compensation.

He also wasn't able to continue his job due to his injuries.

"It massively changed our lives," Topfer said.

"I lost my income, we were forced to move."

Financial difficulties forced Topfer and his wife to leave the Sunshine Coast to live in a more affordable area, where he found more flexible employment.

They left behind the children they share custody of, adding to their mental trauma.

"I understand them saying, 'We have to give it 12 months to see how your injuries have turned out', but you know, 12 months was nearly two years ago, so it's too long," Topfer said.

"Just try and think more about the person that's involved. Try not to be so greedy."

A Suncorp spokesperson said it "believes it had handled [Topfer's] claim fairly and efficiently".

"Discrepancies in medical assessments of Daniel's injuries have contributed to delays in the process."

Suncorp has made several offers to Daniel since legal proceedings began earlier this year.

Given the two-year period required for Daniel's injuries to stabilise, Suncorp believes it has handled his claim fairly and efficiently, progressing within typical timeframes for a claim of this complexity.

Negotiations are ongoing with Daniel's lawyer regarding the appropriate compensation amount, however, discrepancies in medical assessments of Daniel's injuries have contributed to delays in the process.

Suncorp has provided rehabilitation payments to Daniel during the negotiations and is optimistic that a mutually agreeable settlement can be reached soon, which will include compensation for past losses, such as lost income, up to the resolution of the claim.
