New King's first speech 'set the pattern for his reign'

The world hung onto every word delivered when the newly appointed King Charles III gave his historic first address.

According to veteran royal commentator Dickie Arbiter, "he couldn't have got it more right" .

"That speech … has really set the pattern for his reign," Arbiter told A Current Affair host Deborah Knight.

Arbiter said King Charles III, under much scrutiny, managed to get the balance right as he reflected on his mother and the duty he now faces.

"He touched on everything. He touched on his 'darling mama'. He mentioned his eldest son who was the Duke of Cambridge and is now the Prince of Wales," Arbiter said.

The new king also expressed his love for his other son, Prince Harry.

It was also revealed his majesty would no longer be taking a hands-on approach with his charities in his new role as the British monarch.

"But he is confident that they (the charities) will succeed because they're in the right hands," Arbiter said, from Buckingham Palace, where the King's speech was recorded.
