The hot new smart tech products that can bring your home to life

It's the year of the smart home and this Christmas, there's dozens of hot tech products on the market to bring your home to life. 

From smart speakers and displays to customisable lighting, doorbells and even robot vacuums. 

It's never been more affordable to smarten up your home and the interactions you're able to have with these devices is near-endless. 

Some of the world's biggest brands are flooding the market with Google and Amazon ahead of the pack when it comes to things that smarten up your home.

Smart speakers with in-built voice assistants

When it comes to smart speakers and voice assistants, Officeworks tech expert Jarryd McCarthy told A Current Affair: "You can ask it pretty much anything and they're getting smarter and smarter."

Mr McCarthy said smart home technology is the hottest thing on the market right now. 

But what's the difference between a cheap smart speaker and one on the higher end?

The main thing is the quality of sound.

"It really depends on whether you're using this as part of the music system in your house or you're just using it as a voice-activated speaker," Mr McCarthy said. 

Google's Nest range starts at $39 while Amazon's Echo Dot can be found for under $20 at most retailers. 

A smart speaker is perfect for simple commands, but a smart display will add so much more to your setup.

Smart displays

From bedside displays to larger screens for your kitchen bench, there's a variety of uses. 

"You can do things like watch YouTube on it, you can watch recipes while cooking in the kitchen. So there's so much flexibility and people are finding all sorts of uses for it," Mr McCarthy said.

Google and Amazon have a variety of displays on offer, while Lenovo also has their own range which includes Smart Clocks with in-built wireless phone chargers. 

These displays, with the help of a video doorbell, can show you exactly who's at your front door.

Video doorbells

"We're all getting more deliveries to our house, so in combination with a doorbell, this is a great one. So you actually see when the delivery driver rocks up to your house," Mr McCarthy said.

Amazon's Ring Doorbell is the original, with Google only just releasing their own version earlier this year. 

Doorbells are one of the most affordable ways to add some extra security to your home.

Ring products start at around $120.

Video doorbells have the flexibility to be inside or outside, they're wire-free and run on a battery, lasting months.

Smart lighting

Smart lighting enables you to change the brightness and colour of lighting in each room of your home.

It's all controllable by your voice or through an app on your phone. 

Smart home brand Laser offers an affordable range of products for the home from just $10, with light bulbs, light strips, cameras and WiFi power plugs - which can bring almost any appliance in your home to life. 

"It's a great way to lift your work from home space or even bedroom with a little bit of ambient lighting - so it's a really cool product at the moment," Mr McCarthy said. 

On the higher end, Nanoleaf's wall panels are sure to blow you away with their colourful wall features.

Nanoleaf's panels come in a variety of shapes and sizes and start around $200 and go upwards of $500. 

Robot vacuums

For those looking to put their feet up without having to worry about crumbs on the floor again, the luxurious Ecovac Deebot T9+ will do the job, but will set you back almost $1300. 

Programmable with the Ecovac app, it's also compatible with Google and Amazon assistants. 

Robot vacuums like the Ecovac Deebot can make their own way around your home using guided lasers to make sure they don't fall or bump into anything.

The Ecovac Deebot vacuum can also mop the floors. 

With Christmas just around the corner, a smart home device or accessory could be the perfect gift for underneath the tree.
