In fact, today is statistically the most likely day of the year to be dumped.

It's why December 11 has been named National Break-Up Day, not that it's an event anyone is celebrating.

Maybe it's because people looking to exit a relationship want to save themselves buying a Christmas present.

Or perhaps they don't want to be too teary over the summer holidays.

But break-ups aren't necessarily a bad thing, psychologist Carly Dober said.

"I actually think it's a good thing if people do break up and leave relationships that they don't want to be in," Dober said. 

"Ultimately, when people are living a life that's more aligned to them and they're happier, that's better for everyone's mental health."
