The outback discus athlete hoping to bring home Olympic gold

He's the country boy from outback Queensland who trained for his Olympic dream in the front paddock of his parents' property.

Now, discus athlete Matt Denny is in Paris hoping to win gold.

Just three months ago he broke the Australian discus record.

Prior to that, his performance at the Tokyo Olympic Games - coming in fourth place - was Australia's best-ever result for discus.

When he was a teenager, Denny and his parents built a concrete ring in the paddock of the family property in Allora.

It's where the discus-throwing champion spent tens of thousands of hours perfecting his craft.

The 28-year-old credits his success to his country upbringing.

And his family has made the long trek from their rural home to be right here beside him.
